Let us pray...

I've killed it.
bonibaru said I'd kill it, and I did. I feel so guilty... Ok, so it's not necessarily dead. More like in a coma (heh, I almost wrote comma :) ).
Yesterday I was merrily installing direct connect on my mom's computer, and it told me that it needed to restart in order to finish the installation. Those were his last words. I can't get Windows to start again. Not even on Secure Mode. I've tried everything. I have never seen a computer crash so brilliantly before...
I am now using the downstairs computer, on a dial-up connection. Gah. I'm not even thinking of installing or downloading anything to *this* computer. I don't want to be charged with double murder...
Apparently the HD is intact, I can access it through the DOS prompt. Which gives me hope that maybe reinstalling Windows will get it to come back to life. Because I have a few GB of episodes on it, and I *really* don't feel like downloading them all over again :-P Not to mention that I'd just deleted my mom's backup files from my online server (it was taking up 20MB of my web space, and I needed to upload stuff!), and she'll absolutely kill me if she loses that info. So yeah, I'll try reinstalling Windows today, and if that works, I'll burn everything in CDs and reinstall the entire machine. Because it sucks. It sucked even before it went into a coma. It had all this junk installed on it. Which makes me feel just a little less guilty...
God, I hate computers. Why on earth did I choose to get a degree in Computer Science? Why am I destined to work with these beasts till the day I retire? I suddenly believe in karma...
So, poll: Which version of Windows should I install when I remake the computer? 98? ME? XP?

Re:
on 2002-11-21 06:48 pm (UTC)I have no suggestions on the anti-virus. McAfee and Norton always manage to piss me off before the 1 'free' year of updates is over, so at the end of the year I buy the other one for a year. Although, the latest version of Norton hasn't managed to screw things up, yet. It could just be that I'm on 2k.
