So, yesterday I went to the movies with my hubby to watch "Signs". WARNING: If you haven't watched it yet (which is unlikely, since it's been showing in the US for ages), this will totally spoil the movie for you. Same goes for "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable".
Let me start by saying that I loved Shyamalan's two previous movies, "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable". I think he tells great stories, writes great characters, and creates great scenes.
The one thing that bugs me, though, is that he has the annoying habit of hitting us over the head with the ending, as if we were too stupid to understand what he meant if he didn't show us every little detail a million times. In "Sixth Sense" that wasn't so evident, because he was reigned in, but if you watch his commentary on the DVD, he says that if he'd had his way, he would have cut it differently, shown more flashbacks, put in a few more lines. I think the ending was just fine the way it was.
In "Signs", though, the ending is so overexposed that I actually got mad at it. I got it. Things happen for a reason. There was a reason that your wife died. There was a reason that your son had an asthma attack. There was a reason for your daughter's neurotic obsession with contaminated water. I. Got. It. No, really. Move on already. Sheesh.
So yeah, that was annoying, but not totally unexpected. What was totally unexpected (for me, at least) were the huge, glaring plot-holes. The one thing that I liked about Shyamalan's scripts was that there were very few plot-holes. His stories were out there, yes, but they were believable. Somewhat. Even in "Unbreakable". But in "Signs"? Not believable. Maybe they weren't plot-holes, though. Maybe the story just sucked.
Because those aliens? They were stupid. Very stupid. An alien species that decides to take on an entire planet is supposed to be smart, right? They're supposed to have a strategy. They have been studying us for thousands of years, probing, analysing. They know how our bodies work, they know our environment. They have advanced technology.
So how could we beat them with water?? Didn't they know that they had a problem with it? Didn't they ever visit our planet during a rainy day? Didn't they get their feet wet while walking around in those cornfields? And if they knew, wouldn't they have created an armor of some kind to protect themselves?
Besides, what good is a planet that is two thirds water to a species that's allergic (or whatever) to it? What were they going to do, drain it all? Stop the rain?
Stupid, stupid aliens. They should be extinct.
So, that's what I didn't like about the movie :) Other than that, the movie was... cute. The kids were cute. Loved the foil helmets, hee!
And Mel Gibson looks damn fine in a reverend's suit. But not as fine as Lex! Go on, take a look, and then send feedback to
rosenho, 'cause that's just... beautiful :)
