I told y'all I'd stop whining, right? And you *believed* me??

Okay, okay, I'll make this short and simple: Real Life? Sucks. Money (or lack thereof)? Also sucks. Depressed husband who is seriously considering becoming a housewife (or househusband, as is the case)? Yup, sucks. I'll take on-line life anytime...

On another note, I've been wondering about something, maybe y'all can enlighten me. Fic that has no pairing (is this right?) is called "gen". Fic that has a heterossexual pairing is called "het". So why isn't fic that has a homossexual pairing called, I don't know, "ho"? "Homo"? "Homossexual pairing"? Or whatever. Is there something wrong with the word?

Yeah, yeah, I'm just bitching. Don't mind me. I'll go update my recs page now. I need to find and reread some good homossexual fic to lift my mood *g*

Ummmm, I think the term "slash" implies Homo...but I could be wrong. I often am. I'm talented that way.

I suspect that "homo" (and its derivatives) was a more confrontational term back in the early 70's when the Star Trek-based slash fandom got started.

The word Slash comes from the punctuation that was used in the old paper-based zines of the time. A gen story that featured Kirk and Spock was labeled "K,S" and a story that featured Kirk and Spock in a relationship was labeled "K/S".

I don't think you're wrong at all... :) I was just wondering why a homossexual pairing has a "special" word for it, when all the other have just an abbreviation... Seems kind of silly to me. But then, "homo" really *does* have a bad connotation, doesn't it?

Come to think of it, it *still* has a bad connotation, doesn't it.

Thanks for the info! I love learning stuff like this :) So, slash was originally for both het and, um, same sex? Interesting...

Well, as far as I know, slash has never legitimately referred to het. (I've seen some het referred to as hetslash. The referrers are frequently, although not always, heckled.) I guess there wasn't a need for a word that meant het, since that was the assumed flavor of any non-gen fanfic.
