Hmm... I have this feeling that, although he *consciously* wants to break free of Lionel, deep down his desire is to find love and pride in his father.

Yes! Yes, I feel that too! That's exactly what I meant; that he is trying to break free of him *consciously* - to me his desire for acceptance and love is not only something inherent in him, but is what makes him so vulnerable. Especially when it comes to Clark, who has given him friendship and trust (though from what I understand upcoming episodes Clark becomes the uber bitch and throws it back in his face...) and so Lex is willing to do anything for him. It's like an email conversation I'm in the thick of with another vidder, kaliroi; she said something which I'm going to steal and put here:
-- Lex tried to stop Nixon but couldn't; and then he had to be the one to pull the trigger. What he narrowly avoided when Lionel was in danger he finally had to do for Clark - the one person that makes him want to be good. --

*pouts* Its so tragic! And true. Lex really wants love; I mean real, friendship or not, love; for relationships with people that don't just see a bald, rich git - but this makes him vulnerable to give up too much. If Clark doesn't appreciate it and does blame him (as I said, like he apparently does) then he'll resent Clark for giving and not receiving. He just wants love and hugs, people! *grin*
I mean, I don't think he wants to be a bad guy, we've seen him choose to save lionel and help Clark but in some way things are going to go wrong. What we're waiting to see on the show is what that is. How, and WHY he falls. And my guess is it'll probably make me very bitter. And shout at the TV. As I often do.

...And this is not only depressing but digressing a bit from Lex and Lionel! I think (read as hope) you'll have followed my meandering train of thought though. :)
