Overall box-office revenues and the amount of theaters both continue to rise, even as the frequency of movie-going continues to fall in almost every demographic.

Indicators are less encouraging, however, for smaller independent theaters with four screens or less. And, as ever, it’s a tough time for cinema purists and art-house aficionados, both in the East Bay and beyond.

[...]

And even David Lynch recently declared that “feature films are in trouble and the art houses are dead.”
Not exactly, but this is a long article on what theaters are doing to attract audiences and what the problems are.  Daniel Barnes, East Bay Express.

am working on Vividcon plans. we just spent 4 days trying to trap an injured feral cat on our property (we were successful. or rather all the people who did the work were. I was cheerleading and getting sunburned) so we've fallen waaaaay behind.  and today we are off to see a specialist that we've been trying to see for 10 months (he travels doing medical research). and [personal profile] xlorp is in the midst of emergency coverage for 2 co-workers who are out on family leave/vacation. and....

recipe: sour cherry cobbler

Jul. 23rd, 2017 08:32 pm
heresluck: (cake!)
[personal profile] heresluck
For [personal profile] cereta:

This recipe is a bit fussier than cobblers I've made in the past and takes a bit longer. It's also tastier and keeps better, so for me, at least, the tradeoff is worthwhile. The biggest time commitment is pitting the damn cherries, so have an effective and efficient pitter on hand before even contemplating this recipe.

Sour Cherry Cobbler

The timing here, ideally, is that you make (and start to bake) the biscuit topping while the cherries macerate, and then you cook the cherry syrup while the biscuits are in the oven, and everything is ready for assembly at about the same time. This requires pitting the cherries in advance! You can also pit the cherries in advance and stick the macerating cherries in the fridge for several hours (even overnight) and then make the biscuits and cherry syrup later, but once you've made the biscuit topping, you are committed.

The recipe as given fills a 9x13 baking dish. It can easily be halved for an 8x8 dish.

FILLING:
1 1/4 cups sugar
3-4 Tbs cornstarch or tapioca flour (depending on how juicy the cherries are)
pinch salt
4 lbs (6-8 cups) fresh sour cherries, pitted (NOT sweet Bing cherries!)
1 cup dry red wine (or cranberry juice if you don't do wine, but I vote for the booze)
1 3-inch cinnamon stick
1/4 tsp almond extract (optional)

TOPPING:
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
6 Tbs sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
6 Tbs (3/4 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut in pieces
1 cup buttermilk

Make the filling: stir together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a large bowl. Add the cherries and stir to combine. Add the wine and let the cherries macerate for at least 30 minutes. Drain the cherries in a colander set over a medium bowl. Put the cherries in the baking dish; bring the juices and the cinnamon stick to a simmer in a small-to-medium saucepan over medium heat, whisking frequently, until the liquid thickens to a syrupy consistency (about five minutes). Discard cinnamon stick and stir in almond extract. Pour hot juices over cherries in baking dish.

While the cherries macerate, make the topping: In a food processor, combine flour, 6 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Scatter butter pieces over and process until mixture resembles coarse meal, about 15 one-second pulses. (If you don't have a food processor: whisk dry ingredients together and cut in butter using a pastry comb or a couple of forks or however you usually make biscuits.) Transfer to medium bowl; add buttermilk and toss with rubber spatula to combine. Scoop 12 biscuits onto baking sheet, spacing them 1 1/2 to 2 inches apart. (If halving the recipe, scoop 9 smallish biscuits.) Sprinkle biscuits evenly with a tablespoon or two of sugar and bake until very lightly browned on tops and bottoms, about 15 minutes. Remove biscuits, but don't turn off oven.

Arrange hot biscuits over filling. Bake cobbler until filling is bubbling and biscuits are deep golden brown, about 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack at least 10 minutes or you will burn your mouth, not that I know this from experience or anything. Leftovers, if there are any, keep surprisingly well in the fridge for several days.

Oh hey there, I didn't see you come in. I'm just setting things up here, trying to make the place look more lived in and whatnot. It's been a long time since I've done this, dear vidder. Be gentle.

Request: Anne with an E (TV)

Summary: I love attachment issues Anne!!! Gritty! Periods! Rachel and Marilla are still the BEST! If you want to vid Gritty Anne to The Hip, I GET IT! SO DO THE CREATORS OF THIS SHOW! Indulge yourself, dear vidder, and you will indulge me.

Request: The Handmaid's Tale (TV)

Summary: Make me sad and scared and do what needs to be done with the source (so I don't have to). Make the vid with all the warnings and catharsis the hell out of this source, because I really, really don't want to do that but if left alone in the house with this show for much longer, I will.

Request: 아가씨 | The Handmaiden (2016)

Summary: TWIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anything I say is a spoiler so just make me a vid so we don't have to talk about it! Also, I didn't even pick this source as a safety, even though it is, because it just doesn't feel safe. AS IT SHOULDN'T!

Request:True Blood

Summary: I'd love a Lafayette vid, as I am sad and I know you are too, and we need a vid for Lafayette. If that isn't possible, anything completely insane is always appreciated by me and I won't ever turn down a bit of Bill/Eric.

Request: 커피프린스 1호점 | Coffee Prince

Summary: IT'S ONLY MY VERY FAVORITE THING OF ALL THE FAVORITE THINGS I LOVE IT SO MUCH PLEASE MAKE ME MORE VIDS

Request: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

Summary: Give me Keanu being menaced/seduced and I'll die happy. If that isn't possible go for crazy broke with the source. I tried to pick a safety that is bonkers enough to work both with and against the entire Roxette discography, because I care about you, dear vidder. You are welcome.

Request:  Anne of Green Gables (TV 1985)

Summary: Listen I love the new Gritty Anne, but this Gilbert Blythe is basically supposed to be my husband so justify my love. Maybe not to "Justify My Love" or maybe to? I will not tell you how to live, dear vidder.  If you are unable to  create a Gilbert Blythe vid (and I haven't been able to either, so I get it) then again Marilla and Rachel are the BEST and Anne is pretty great as well and you know how I feel because you probably feel it as well if we matched.

Well, that pretty much sums up my requests, dear vidder.  I am so pleased you are here and thank you so much for matching with me.  If this is the first time you have been exposed to me, I apologize for my abuse of the capslock and the exclamation point but I feel the point needs to be made: I am exactly like this. Oops?

For anyone else that might be reading, HEY! I MISSED YOU! HOW ARE YOU? How's the family? What's new with you? It's been a minute, hasn't it?  I'm gonna miss seeing you this year at Vividcon, but oh, life. It's bigger, ya know? Have fun and I promise I'm there next year.

Treats are always appreciated and loved upon, if the mood ever strikes.

  1. Finished my two-week employment marking papers for a National Exam for Visual Arts. It was a good experience to gain as an Educator in the field, but not one I'll be repeating any time soon. Way too tedious having to mark the same couple questions over and over for what felt like THOUSANDS of students. Plus it took up the entire first two weeks of summer vacation. So glad I am done! \o/ And now my vacation can truly begin! \o/

  2. I've been avidly following the SDCC tag on Tumblr since Thursday, and it's amazing seeing so many fandoms converging in one spot. The superstars are all there, the new trailers are out, the fans are delighted like kids at Christmas, and there seems to be so much *JOY* everywhere. It's been such a treat, waking up the past couple days wondering what new delights await. :D

  3. I also noted (via Tumblr) that in the midst of all the glee, the Supergirl fandom is going through an Actors-related Thing. Which, my sympathies, Supergirl slash fans. More than anything, I know that it's the disrespect and disregard for what you hold dear that hurts. The complicated relationship between Kara and Lena, and their chemistry, was one of the few things to pique my interest in the show. Apparently I have a type. :b As a longtime Super-Luthor shipper from the olden days of Smallville, I feel your pain of loving your ship even when knowing it's never ever gonna be validated or respected by TPTB. It brings back so many memories... *___* Hey, at least they're honest and don't falsely pander and queerbait like some. *side-eyes a certain wolfy show*

  4. Anyway, speaking of Lena Luthor, and Katie McGrath (who I adore ♥)... I'm thinking of doing some BBC Merlin fanart for this week's drawing challenge at [community profile] drawesome. We're supposed to draw an object from two different perspectives, and I'm thinking some kind of important artefact, like King Arthur's Excalibur.

There are a *LOT* of Significant Objects in fandom to choose from. Stuff like weapons - Thor's hammer Mjolnir, Cap's Shield, Harry Potter's wand, Wonder Woman's lasso, the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, Wynonna Earp's colt. And then there's vehicles, like Stile's jeep and Dean's Impala, and every sci-fi spaceship ever... *g*

On Monday, because we don't know how to slow down ;) - we went out to Paignton Zoo - and zoo trips ALWAYS mean a ton of pictures to get through afterwards *g*

Under the cut are some of the pictures and at the bottom of the post is the link to the full album on flickr.com - I have to admit, that I managed to cook it all down to 136 pictures in the album, where I came back from the trip with a good 600-700 pictures. It's what always happens - I get carried away ;)

We drove from just outside Tavistock, across Dartmoor to Paignton - along the way hoping to see Dartmoor ponies (wild ponies) and we got more than we'd bargained for - ended up behind a car with one of the ponies trotting along the road, not really able to get off it, but not really giving a toss about there being several cars behind it.

Tracy K. Smith is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite poets. Finding two new poems in this month's Nation was a gift.

The United States Welcomes You

Why and by whose power were you sent?
What do you see that you may wish to steal?
Why all this dancing? Why do your dark bodies
Drink up the light? What are you demanding
That we feel? Have you stolen something? Then
What is that leaping in your chest? What is
The nature of your mission? Do you seek
To offer a confession? Have you anything to do
With others brought by us to harm? Then
Why are you afraid? And why do you invade
Our night, hands raised, eyes wide, and mute
As ghosts? Is there something you wish to confess?
Is this some enigmatic type of test? What if we
Fail? How and to whom do we address our appeal?
